Is Destiny 2 Crossplay in 2022? (PC, Xbox One, PS4)

It is a fact that Destiny 2 elevated the entire MMO genre of gaming in general.

However, since it first came out on the 28th of August 2017, gamers across all platforms all had just one major issue with the game, it had no cross-platform gaming capabilities.

Is Destiny 2 Crossplay? The answer is, YES.

All of you Destiny 2 players can now rejoice as in the latest update the creators of Destiny 2, Bungie, have introduced cross-platform gaming capabilities in the game which now allows friends on different platforms to play with each other in the online multiplayer mode.

But how does it interact exactly on each and every different platform? And is the game Cross gen as well? What about its gameplay, is it good enough?

We’re sure these questions are racing through your mind at the moment.

And luckily for you, we’ll be answering each of them in detail in the article below. So, without any further ado, let’s begin.

Is Destiny 2 Crossplay/Cross-Platform?

Until now, Destiny 2 has been released on Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and PC and is also available on Google Stadia.

As you can see, the game itself is available on a wide range of gaming platforms that can become quite difficult to manage during cross-platform gaming.

Thus, let us take you through the relationships between each of these platforms and see exactly how crossplay is possible between them.

PC and Google Stadia

Google Stadia is a relatively new platform when compared with the PC, Playstation, or Xbox. However, the cloud-based gaming service created and developed by Google has taken the world by storm during its early days and now is host to some of the biggest gaming titles in recent years including Destiny 2.

Thus, due to the popularity of the platform, cross-platform gaming between it and the PC is a must for gamers and thankfully Destiny 2 provides its players with just that.

And recent reviews by gamers suggest that crossplay between the two platforms is incredibly smooth which is surprising as the cross-platform update just came out and is working almost perfectly for these two platforms at least.

PC and Xbox

The relationship between the PC and Xbox has always been relatively good, especially if your PC is running on a Windows operating system.

And to be bluntly honest, Destiny 2 players mostly use the PC or Xbox as it gives them the best value for their money.

The PC and Xbox gamers have been clamoring for cross-platform features for years and finally, their wish has been granted as the game is now fully cross-platform between the PC and Xbox which means friends on both platforms can now freely play with each other without any noticeable lag.

Furthermore, there is no need to manually activate crossplay because as soon as you download the update, crossplay will be automatically enabled for all players.

PC and PS4/PS5

PC and PS4/PS5 players have always had a sort of strained relationship because both the platforms have never been particularly friendly with each other.

However, the creators of Destiny 2 didn’t let that stop them as the latest update makes the game fully cross-platform compatible which includes cross-play between the PC and PS4/PS5.

To contend with the difficulty of implementing cross-play between the PC and PS4/PS5, Bungie has come up with their own unique way which entails generating a unique Bungie name for each existing player which contains their Login ID, the one they used immediately after crossplay was implemented, and a 4 digit unique identifier.

Using this new Bungie name, players will be recognized by the system immediately regardless of what platform they are playing on.

PS4/PS5 and Xbox

Consoles have always had a special relationship when it came to cross-platform gaming so you can imagine how much of a shock it was to all gamers that Destiny 2 had no crossplay capabilities even between consoles when it first came out.

However, Bungie has finally set that right by implementing complete cross-play between the PS4/PS5 and Xbox consoles.

For example, by using your unique Bungie name, which we’ve explained previously, players will be uniquely identified no matter which console they are playing and play with each other.

Moreover, new players that roll into the game will be prompted to create their Bungie name during account creation.

However, one thing that existing Destiny 2 players should note is that if your existing Bungie name is longer than 26 characters after your 4 digit unique identifier is added then you will be forced to shorten it to a maximum of 26 characters.

On top of that, your Bungie name cannot have any weapon icons or unique font characters.

Is Destiny 2 Cross Gen?

Now that the gaming world has experienced the introduction of next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, another question just as important as the cross platform question has popped up, is Destiny 2 Cross gen?

Well, just like the cross-platform question, the answer to this question is also yes! Frankly, Destiny 2 is an MMO first-person shooter which means the major reason gamers pick this game up is so they can play online with their friends, so the game having cross-gen play should honestly be a no-brainer.

And Bungie understands that which is why they’ve done their best to implement latency and lag-free cross-gen gaming in Destiny 2 so that the players moving on to the next-gen consoles are still able to enjoy the games online multiplayer mode with friends on previous-gen consoles.

Destiny 2 Gameplay

Destiny 1 at the time of its release was considered a genuine masterpiece when it comes to free-flowing first-person shooters.

However, Destiny 2 has upped the ante and improved upon the mechanics of its predecessor by a considerable margin and is rightly considered the superior of the two games.

The first improvement we noticed was its single-player campaign or story was much more well-rounded and complete with an excellent antagonist that during the first moments of the story does an excellent job at drawing out the player’s anger.

They’ve gone a step forward with their gameplay as well as it’s much more fine-tuned and accurate. The developers have played close attention and taken a special interest in improving the loot gathering as well.

Lastly, we should also point out that the upgrade in graphics has been significant and if you’re a player playing for the first time, you’ll definitely notice it as soon as you get into the game.

Pros of Destiny 2 Being Cross-Platform

At some point in this article, we talked about the importance of Cross-platform gaming in this modern technology era and how the increasing competition between platforms has led to cross-platform games rising in popularity.

But how are cross-platform games are important and what advantages exactly do cross-platform games hold over non-cross platform games.

Well, firstly, the fan base of cross-platform games, especially a game with excellent shooting mechanics like Destiny 2, is much larger than in non-cross-platform games.

As a matter of fact, explaining each and every pro would take an entire article of its own. We’ll just leave you with a list of the most important advantages a cross-platform game holds.

  • Matchmaking is much quicker as the average number of players is greater.
  • Cross-platform games allow you to test your mettle against other Console or PC players with higher skill levels which in turn make you a better player.
  • You can obviously play with your friends on different platforms and feel the joy of progressing through the game together.
  • If the game is to be updated, Developers don’t have to work on multiple versions of the game as they can just work on one and implement them on all platforms.

Does Destiny 2 Have Free Dual Entitlement?

Another question that often accompanies the cross-platform and cross-gen question is if Destiny 2 has a dual entitlement feature.

More than that, gamers are asking if the game has a free dual entitlement as paying for another copy of the game for the next-gen consoles can be quite a hassle.

Well, surprisingly enough, Destiny 2 does have dual entitlement features and what’s more exciting is that it’s absolutely free!

We know all of you who’ve bought Destiny 2 for previous-gen consoles are jumping for joy right now and why wouldn’t you, considering you can switch to a next-gen console and play the game there without paying anything or any additional conditions.

On top of that, because the game is also cross-platform you can easily switch from PS4 to Xbox Series X and still play the same copy of the game which is definitely an added bonus.

Does Destiny 2 Have Cross-Progression?

Progressing in a game like Destiny 2 is extremely fun but can become a hassle at times as the enemies get tougher and tougher as you progress forward.

Moreover, if you lose that progress and have to start all over again, it really can break you as a player and even dissuade you from even starting up the game again.

Thankfully, you won’t experience anything like that with Destiny 2 as even if you switch platforms and start the game up there your progress will be saved provided you remember your Bungie name.

So, with this information, we command all players to charge forth without fear and best the leviathan raid!

Is Destiny 2 an RPG?

We’ve mentioned already that Destiny 2 is an MMO or massively multiplayer online game and almost all MMO games have certain role-playing features in them and Destiny 2 is no different in that respect.

However, unlike some people’s expectations, the game is not fully an RPG as it has a few RPG elements but the rest of the game is riddled with first-person shooter elements that outweigh the RPG elements.

Thus, the game is categorized as a first-person shooter rather than as an RPG. Bungie has even stated that they planned to give the game more RPG elements, but unfortunately, they had to make way for some of the MMO elements of the game.

So, to give a clear answer to the question, no Destiny 2 is not an RPG game but it does have RPG elements.
